LE 6 COSE DA SAPERE RIGUARDO AL PIUMINO D’OCA PRIMA DI PROCEDERE ALL’ACQUISTO: 1. QUALITÀ DELLA PIUMA Gli animali che offrono le migliori piume sono solo oche e anatre. Bisogna avere chiara la distinzione fra piumino o fiocco e piuma. Il piumino d’oca si presenta come un soffice batuffolo formato da piccole “barbe” e proviene dal sotto petto dell’oca. La sua struttura permette di trattenere l’aria creando un effetto isolante che consente agli animali di sopportare escursioni termiche e di passare dal caldo al freddo. Il piumino risulta più pregiato della piuma, che è composta da uno stelo detto rachide, da cui si dipartono i filamenti. È importante, dunque, leggere sempre l’etichetta e guardare la composizione: l’ideale sarebbe 100% piumino oca, o almeno 90% piumino e 10% piumetta. THE 6 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT GOOSE DOWN DUVETS BEFORE BUYING: 1. DOWN QUALITY The animals that provide the best feathers are geese and ducks, though it is essential to understand the clear distinction between down feathers and ordinary feathers. Goose down looks like a soft puff formed by tiny ‘barbs’ and comes from the chest of the goose. Its structure traps air causing an insulating effect that allows animals to withstand large thermal variations from hot to cold. Down is more precious than feather, which is made up of a spindle stem, from which filaments branch. It is essential then to always read the label and look at the stuffing composition: the ideal would be 100% goose down, or at least 90% down and 10% feather.
2. PROVENIENZA DELLA PIUMA Ciò che fa la differenza nella qualità della piuma è la provenienza degli animali. Naturalmente gli animali provenienti da allevamenti situati in paesi freddi come la Siberia, il Canada, la Groenlandia, l’Europa Nord Orientale (Ungheria, Polonia) forniranno una piuma più folta, soffice e pregiata. Il top è costituito dal fiocco di Edredone, un’anatra selvatica che vive prevalentemente in Islanda. Più è alta la qualità della piuma, meno sarà la quantità di piuma necessaria per realizzare il piumino con la stessa capacità termica o Filling Power. 2. DOWN SOURCE What makes a difference in the quality of down is where the animals live. Naturally, animals in colder countries, such as Siberia, Canada, Greenland and North Eastern Europe (e.g. Hungary, Poland), provide a thicker, softer and more premium down. The best comes from eider, a wild duck that lives predominantly in Iceland. The higher the quality of the down, the less down is needed to make a duvet with the same thermal capacity or ‘Filling Power’.
3. IL FILING POWER Il Filling power è la capacità termica dell’imbottitura o in questo caso del piumino. Più è alto il potere calorico della piuma, minore sarà la quantità stessa di piuma utilizzata, cioè il rapporto volume/peso dell’imbottitura del piumino da cui si deduce la qualità del prodotto. Più è alto il Filling Power, migliore sarà la qualità della piuma: infatti più la piuma è pregiata, minore sarà la quantità che ne occorre per riempire il piumone, che risulterà più soffice e leggero a parità di potere calorico. 3. FILL POWER Fill power is the thermal capacity of the stuffing or, in this case, of the down. The higher the thermal capacity of the down, the less down needs to be used, so that the volume to weight ratio of the stuffing reveals the quality of the product. The higher the Fill Power, the higher the quality of the down. If the down is more premium, a smaller amount will be needed to fill the duvet, which will be softer and lighter, yet with the same thermal qualities. L’ E S S E N Z A DEL CALORE THE ESSENCE OF HEAT
LA LEGGEREZZA C H E AV VOLGE LIGHTNESS ALL AROUND 4. I PUNTI DI CALORE Prima di procedere all’acquisto è essenziale conoscere il coefficiente di calore più adatto alle nostre esigenze. Per questo i piumini vengono classificati con dei punti di calore che vanno da 1 a 5, dove per 1 si intende la versione light, leggerissima per l’estate e per 5 quella massima per climi rigidi. Tra i modelli di piumini, il più consigliato è il quattro stagioni, formato da piumini, uno leggero (valore 1) e uno medio (valore 3/4), che uniti attraverso appositi bottoncini forniscono il massimo comfort e calore (1+3/4 punti di calore). 5. TESSUTO E CONFEZIONE Anche il tessuto esterno usato per contenere la piuma fa la differenza. Il rivestimento deve essere di cotone antipiuma, a trama fitta e compatta in modo da impedire la fuoriuscita dei fiocchi, permette il regolare passaggio d’aria e impedisce l’insediamento all’interno di acari e polveri.Il confezionamento può essere a quadri fissi, a canali o a cassettoni. 4. HEAT RATING Before buying, it is essential to know the heat coefficient best suited to your needs. For this reason, duvets are classified with heat ratings from 1 to 5, where 1 is for the summer months and 5 is for the coldest of climates. Among the different models, the most recommended is the four-seasons, which is formed by a light duvet (rated 1) and a medium duvet (rated 3/4) that can be combined with buttons to provide maximum comfort and warmth (1+3/4). 5. FABRIC & STITCHING The outer fabric used to hold the down also makes a difference. The covering must be made of feather-proof cotton, breathable yet densely and compactly weaved so as to prevent feathers from escaping or mites and powder from entering. The stitching can be boxed, channelled or baffled.
6. EDFA Associazione dell’industria delle piume, tutela gli interessi del consumatore e degli animali. IDFB certificare la qualità delle piume usate Downpass traccia la provenienza delle piume e della protezione degli animali. Cosa molto importante è che la piuma deve, innanzitutto, essere vergine cioè nuova, mai usata in precedenza, ma lavata, sterilizzata e depolverizzata. 6. CERTIFICATION & ANIMAL PROTECTION The major international certifications we use to make our down products are as follows: NOMITE guarantees that the product is hypoallergenic and anti-mite, therefore suitable also for allergy sufferers. L’OEKO-TEX® certifies for non-toxicity. EDFA is the industry association that protects the interests of customers and animals. IDFB certifies the quality of the down or feathers used. Downpass traces the origin of down and protects the welfare of animals. What is most important is that the feather must first be virgin, that is new and unused, but washed, sterilized and dedusted. I topper a seconda del materiale con cui sono imbottiti si suddividono in: FRESCHI se realizzati in fibra di Aerelle, una particolare fibra di poliestere dissipatore del calore. Grazie al forte potere di assorbimento del calore disperdono quest’ultimo lungo tutta la superficie lasciando al fresco il corpo e rallentando il riscaldamento della superficie di contatto con il corpo. ANTI UMIDITÀ se realizzati in piuma d’oca. La piuma d’oca ha infatti la capacità di assorbile l’umidità del letto e del corpo tenendo quest’ultimo all’asciutto.
